Do you want to take advantage of the good weather somewhere other than Orlando?
EAA Chapter 1496 is offering a 3-day Instrument ground school course November 19-21 at the Kissimmee-Gateway airport.
The instrument Ground School Course meets all FAA Requirements under FAR Part 61 and covers all technical subject material necessary to pass the instrument written exam.
The exam results are valid for 24 calendar months.
About the Course
We have formatted the Instrument Ground School class to have a fast-track schedule without sacrificing learning retention. The course contains 24 hours of instruction and test preparation, spread over three days. It also covers all required test information and provides time for supplemental material which helps prepare our instrument students for practical training in the aircraft.
Best of all, with 24 hours of instruction, this is definitely NOT a test cramming course. On the contrary: you will receive an excellent preparation for a lifetime of safe instrument flying, and you'll receive tips not available elsewhere. This type of in-depth preparation is necessary for your safety, and we know that you'll agree with us the first time you make an IFR approach and the landing strip is where it is supposed to be.
The majority of students take and pass the written exam with a high average score. You can too!
Price
The course fee is $150.00. This fee includes text, computerized testing supplement, charts, approach plates, and airport facilities directory, and more.

Member of EAA Chapter 1496 now have unlimited free use of an FAA Approved Flight Training Device. This BATD (Basic Aviation Training Device)
The ELITE PI-135 Basic ATD is a fully procedural system, which can be used for complete startup, flight, and shutdown procedures. You can even use the PI-135 to perform the approaches, holding procedures, and intercepting/tracking required under section 61.57(c)(1) for recent instrument experience.
The PI-135 is equipped with a Garmin GNS 430W GPS system and you can learn about GPS approaches, and how to program and operate the GNS 430W. Aircraft types are the Cessna 172, Cessna 182, Piper Archer, Piper Seneca, Beech Baron, Beecn Bonanza, TB10, TB20 and Mooney non-EFIS/glass.
The trainer is categorized as an FAA CERTIFIED Basic ATD with flying credits of 2.5 hours toward Private rating, 10 hours toward Instrument rating and maintaining instrument currency.
It is also great for introducing non-instrument students to basic aircraft operating procedures.
Should a pilot logbook entry be required to document traiining or currency, an FAA certified ground instructor must be present during all phases of training and endorse the logbook. Instruction with a ground instructor is available at competitive rates.

On a warm and sunny Saturday afternoon, EAA Chapter 1496, Orlando Gateway Sport Aviation Training Center, Kissimmee-Gateway Airport and many volunteers flew 55 new Young Eagles! The Young Eagles enjoyed hot dogs, chips, drinks and met many find folks from the Orlando Flyers remote control aircraft club, Balloons over Orlando, two static display aircraft and a youth activity table.
Our route of flight took us from Kissimmee's Runway 15 turning West towards Disney World, skirting Old Town Kissimmee and back for a smooth landing. All the kids received a "goodie bag" filled with a free Private Pilot ground schoo courtesty of Sporty's Pilot Shop, their official Young Eagles logbook, and tons of kid-related stuff from our friends at AOPA.
Visit the photo section for an upclose and personal view of the event.
The next Young Eagles flight rally will be in a few short weeks. Stay tuned!

The EAA Chapter 1496 Leadership team met with Dr. Greco, Superintendent of the Osceola County School System to discuss a potential symbiotic relationship between the airport, Osceola County Schools, EAA Chapter 1496 and other airport businesses.
Our discussions centered around the thought of how we, the airport and the school system can develop a symbiotic relationship which would benefit everyone involved. There is great potential for a fantastic aviation-related studies program within the school system using Osceola High School as a "test" school given their proximity to the airport.
As our meeting progressed we touched on several paramount items for consideration.
They are:
Making ourselves known to math and science teachers and inviting them to fly with us over a few Saturday mornings - perhaps lunch in Ocala, etc.
Introducing same to the control tower, airport management, etc.
Providing expertise and hands-on training to math and science teachers along with motivation to get kids excited about aviation-related careers.
Assist with the creation of an "aviation" or "flying" club within OHS and inviting them to one of our EAA Young Eagles events. (www.youngeagles.org)
Develop a mentor-mentoree relationship with the top students from each math or science-related class and provide guidance, hands-on experience and one-on-one training
Invite students to our monthly EAA chapter meetings at Kissimmee Airport so that they can gain "touchy-feely" experience with aircraft on display and learn from others
Develop and host an eight-week "Kissimmee Youth Aviation Center" class in which each Saturday 10am-12pm whereas students learn hands-on in subjects such as weather/meteorology, flight planning, pilotage, aerodynamics, weight and balance computations, aircraft performance calculations, navigation, aircraft safety, aircraft building and construction with the last day a 1-hour graduation flight whereas they get to take the controls.
It was decided that our EAA chapter will assist with the recruiting and creation of an Advisory Board which would work closely with the school system to get their aviation sciences off to a great start.

A few of us are planning to attend AirVenture 2010 Oshkosh (www.airventure.org) July 26-August 1. Some members are staying in hotels, dorms and camping out. Stephen will be camping out in his RV at the 101 woods July 24 - 30. It may be great exposure for EAA 1496 members to "corral camp" together and enjoy each other's company, BBQ, burgers and the usual early morning breakfast.
If you would like to attend and camp, email Stephen at [email protected] for details and advice. He will be departing Orlando on the morning of the 22nd with overnight stops in Chattanooga, TN and Champaign, IL. There may be one seat left for the ride up but you must provide your own camping gear. The RV is full.
Let's have some fun!
